licorice ... it comes from the root of a special tree ... here in Barcelona (Catalonia) in the herb shops you can buy fresh roots (as well as dry ones, to make infusions), they sell in not too thick or long sides, the honest shops sells them by kg. the not so honest, a euro the piece. at fairs, you can find licorice sticks, big enough to be a help to walk ... my foreign friends tell me it has a weak taste of anise ... I do not find it, to me (who I eat it all) it just taste good ... probably is because I use to eat it a lot as a kid ...
if you ever go to Bcn, try to get one ...
