Conclusion:
What opening message you send to people has no impact on whether you connect with them or not

Be it; The dreaded "hey how are you" or a reference to topic in their profile, (cause you want to show you're not an NPC, right ?), or even a one to one match in interests and preferences.... All bunk!

it probably won't even get opened due to:
A) a fload of messages being received, especially if a lady (i have been shown inboxes with hundreds of messages pending)
B) Interpals' janky notification system not flagging it up

And even if it does get read, most people have already decided the kind of person they want / want not to respond to, mainly based on visual cues. Country, ethnicity, region, looks in pics, etc etc, Your words there after are going to be like water off a ducks back in the face of that.
