I think Osaka is also great, totally different than Tokyo. Better food and people there are more friendly, direct and warm.Osaka and Kyoto are both in greater Kansai region, to go to Kyoto, you must first go to Osaka as the airport is in Osaka. Osaka to Kyoto/Nara/Kobe/Wakayama are all within reach of 1 to 1.5 hours by train. As for Hokkaido I also love it, but it's too similar to what you used to see in Russia or Nordic countries.

For Japan I recommend Kyoto more and Australia definitely Melbourne.
