I need world wide help (getting tired of English)
10:00 pm
UTC on June 13, 2009
I'm getting tired of speaking English. I need to learn new languages.
I try not to speak English on a daily basis, but I hunger for new words. So, if you could help me, I would appreciate it. Let's play a little wall post game.
Below, post 10 phrases and/or words in your native language and what they mean.
They could be common phrases, random quotes, and every day words such as Hello and How are you? ANYTHING!
This is fun because other users would see this note and learn multiple words.
Here are some Navajo words and phrases. Enjoy!
Navajo (English)
Analysis
Bighan hózhónígo ádayósin = They keep their house nice and clean.
* Bi (he, she, it, they, theirs) ghan (referring to someone's home)

Well, I've seen some german speaking people already posted something:) I thought to make it a little more difficult and will choose words which can be translated in two ways, weither you want to speak the german spoken in germany or in austria:
potatoes=Kartoffeln (german)/Erdäpfel (austrian)
apricot=Aprikose (german)/Marille (austrian)
green beans=grüne Bohnen (german)/Fisolen (austrian)
sheet=Laken (german)/Leintuch (austrian)
pancake=Pfannkuchen (german)/Palatschinken (austrian)
There are many, many more but I think I will stop here. Now to words which sound very similar but have a completely different meaning:
gift (engl.) = Geschenk (german)
Gift (german) = poison (engl.)
mist (engl.) = Nebel (german)
Mist (german) = junk (engl.)
eventually (engl.) = schließlich (german)
eventuell (german) = maybe (engl.)
to become (engl.) = werden (german)
bekommen (german) = to get (engl.)
So, enough for today;-)

Here are some sentences from The Analects of Confucius.
the philosophy in these sentence have deeply influenced Chinese life and thought.
子曰:有朋自远方来,不亦了乐乎(isnt is great when friends visit from distant place?)
子曰:吾日三省吾身,为人谋而不忠乎。与朋友交而不信乎。传不习乎。(each day i examine myself in three ways:in doing things for others, have i been disloyal? In my interactions with friends,have i been untrustworthy? Have not practiced what i have preached?)
子曰:不患人之不己知,患不之人也.(i am not bothered by the fact that i am unknown. i am bothered by the fact that i do not know others).
子曰:吾十有五而志与学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩。
Confucius said: "At fifteen my heart was set on learning, at thirty i stood firm, at forty i had no more doubts, at fifty the mandate of heaven, at sixty my ear was obedient,at seventy i could follow my heart's desire without transgressing the norm."

I don't have any useful languages so here is some Latin:
** a couple tips** - "v"s sound like "w"s. Ancient Latin doesn't really have silent letters, but their are vowel combinations (diphthongs) tlike ae, oi, ou etc. The Romans didn't use j or w.
Salve: (sal way) hello/greetings
Vale: (wal-ay) farewell/be well
Denuone Latine loquebar? - Was I speaking Latin again?
Canis meus id comedit- My dog ate it.
Romans weren't well known for their pleasantries so let's cover some insults:
Non est sana puella/pueri/vir/mulier : The girl/boy/man/woman is insane
Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam. : I have a catapult. If you do not give me all your money, I shall throw a huge rock at your head.
Recedite, plebes! Gero rem imperialem! - Stand back plebians! I am carrying out imperial business.
Antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem. - In ancient times, children like you were left on the most windswept cliffs to die.
Utinum barbari spatium proprium tuum invadent. -May barbarians invade your personal space.
Totius vobis frontem tabernae sopionibus scribam. -I shall write rude things about you all over the tavern wall.

1.품절녀(poom jeol nyeo)- no equivalent in english as i know. newly coined word refering to a beautiful woman already married or in a relationship.
품절 ; derectly translated to "out of stock" + 녀 ; a suffix meaning "female."
