well, unfortunately, in china, there are a lot of death sentences concerning murdering, political wrong-doings, dealing with drugs and so on.
laws here in china are not strickly obeyed. "guanxi"-relationship plays an important role in chinese society.
ever heard of Geert Hofstede's 5 dimensions of culture?
one of them is Uncertainty Avoidance Index .
you can read something about it.

you see, there is a government filtering software that can detect specific words that the government doesn't want the people on the internet to see. and we are not allowed to logged into youtube.com or twitter.com. it's a pity. anyway, you can speak ill of the government as long as you don't go to extremes.
the reason officially given for network control is that people can easily get misled by rumor or something like that, which might lead to an uncontrolable situation since china has the largest number of internet users.
every problem that seems tiny in other countries becomes a tough one to solve in china considering its large population.

well, the internet restriction is a little bit tight, which became one of the reasons why google quitted its market in mainland china. you see, north korea at present looks like what china used to be. i mean, china has changed for the better. it'll be all right as long as you don't make attempts to change the political system.
as time goes by, i think it would be impossible for the government or the party to get fully control over the 'freedom' of speech.
best wishes. :)
