Not all mammals and other organisms have a high degree of metacognition (i.e., the capacity to represent representation, also referred to as metarepresentation). I think dolphins, elephants, some bird species, greater apes, and etc. have been argued to have such a higher-order level of consciousness.

I guess it can be said most mammals are aware (i.e., conscious) to a certain extent, but not all animals have an internally constructed model of self to be aware of. This kind of relates to how we create social identity and stuff. My question was directed specifically to octopus because you are involved in an oceanic defense group, and octopus have exhibited strange behavior that is difficult to analyze. If we had stronger neuroimaging techniques, this question would be easier to answer with stronger correlations based off the neural correlates of consciousness (NCC), but I don't think it is easy to answer at this point with the amount of information we have and the imaging technology.

Do you think octopus are self-aware? Can we really describe their thought processes by referencing other species? How can we even begin to understand a creature that is so distant from us in the phylogenetic tree?
